How to Add Ribbon to a Christmas Tree

Happy holidays, friends! How are you doing this holiday season? Are you like me- in shock that 2021 is almost over?! Like how did this happen! Seems like we were just ringing in the new year. Are you excited for 2022? What plans do you have to the new year? Now for the big question- how is your holiday decorating going for this season? I LOVE decorating Christmas trees! One of my favorite steps in decorating a tree is adding the ribbon. Thanks for joining me as I share how to add ribbon to a Christmas tree!

Finding the Perfect Ribbon

I LOVE the impact ribbon makes on a Christmas tree! Not only does it add texture, but depending on the colors you use the ribbon can make the tree decor pop! Bright colors, neutral colors, polka dots, stripes, all ribbon makes a statement.

Back in the day, I was a deco mesh QUEEN! I was such a fan and trust me when I say I was not shy when adding deco mesh to my trees! No way. I believed in going big or going home and this girl ALWAYS went big! Let me see if I can dig out a picture from the archives to prove my deco mesh queen status.

Deco mesh queen reigning in 2015- where’s the lie?!!

2015 was the last year I decorated my tree with deco mesh tree. Admittedly, it was too much! Is there even a tree under all that mesh?! Lol! Although I stopped using deco mesh, I was not ready for a super natural feel. My tree needed umph. It needed some pizzaz! Ribbon to the rescue!

Do What You Love

My favorite type of ribbon is wired ribbon. You can bend it, twist it, and shape it into the look you want! It also tends to stay in place because of the wiring.

Love the mix of gold, white, black, and blush- even have a little navy in there! While it is a mix of materials and metals, the ribbon ties it all together for a cohesive look!

On this tree, the black and white and blue tartan plaid ribbon are wired ribbon. The blush colored ribbon is not wired- the first time I used non-wired ribbon! You might notice it lays softer.

Ribbon is the first thing I put on the tree. My trees are artificial and pre-lit- otherwise lights would be the first thing. Once the tree is up, I take my roll of ribbon and cut it in 6-8 inch sections. A 7.5 feet tree takes lots of ribbon- so keep cutting!

I take each section and make winged ends. Here is how I do it: I fold the end in half, and cut the tip on an angle. See!

Do you see the beautiful faux fur ribbon on this tree? This was my tree in 2019! One of my favorites!

Once my ribbon is cut, I begin putting it on the tree. I take a branch and wrap the tip of the branch around the center of the sectioned ribbon. That holds it in place! Keep doing this until you have all the ribbon you want to have on the tree!

Adding Ribbon to a Christmas Tree- Making it Work

When I have a new roll of ribbon, I find it easiest to cut it into strips first. I like to cut angled tips- makes it look fancy! Isn’t this black and white diamond ribbon gorgeous? I love it- I use it all the time! It made it’s grand debut on a Halloween decorated Christmas tree. This black and white ribbon against bright orange. Oh la la!

Throwing in some black and white striped ribbon for added flair!

As I add ribbon, I step back after I have placed 5-6 pieces to see how it looks. I like my ribbon to look systematic- even though the placement is super random. Once you have your ribbon on the tree, you are ready to add everything else- ornaments, picks, embellishments, garland- whatever you LOVE!
