Entryway Makeover- Part 3 Where Did it All Begin?
Yes, this is the third project in my entryway makeover. All projects done with my own two hands! My foyer area used to look like this:
Our front door basically opens and we spill into these two rooms- a formal living and dining area. There was no structure to the space, and certainly no character! It was, admittedly, an area of our home I stayed away from and took little pride in. On occasion, we ate a holiday dinner at the dining room table. For the most part, I entered our home and hurriedly moved to our family room just to avoid the space!
Looking back, I cannot believe I allowed this to go on as long as I did. Truth is, there was so much I wanted to do to improve it, but I was overwhelmed and had no clue where to start.
Is this you? Do you see yourself or your home in anything I am describing? I feel you, my friends. I spent years pinning beautiful style on Pinterest, ideas for how I would like my home to look, but that was as far as it went. Pinning, but no doing.
Believing in YOU- You Can Do It!
So what changed? In a word… Me! In so many of the blog posts I pinned, the people doing the DIY were women. Moms with careers and kids and a passion for making their house the home of their dreams. And this prompted me to finally decide if they could do it, so could I!
While Black Friday shopping in November 2018, I bought a nailing gun and circular saw. I finally worked up the courage to take my first step toward turning our builders grade home into the home of my dreams! But baby steps, baby steps… it would be six more weeks before I actually put the tools to use on my first board and batten project.
After completing a smaller wall of board and batten, I decided to go big or go home- literally! I decided to hang board and batten along our entire foyer wall.
The change was incredible! Suddenly I LOVED walking through our front door! The update was light and bright and inspired me to keep going!
Bring on the Bricks
Up next? Tackling the archway with some faux brick!
Faux brick is probably the easiest and most inexpensive DIY- and it brings dramatic results! I am hooked! I decided a faux brick archway was needed. As you walk through our front door, you see it immediately.

After board and batten and faux brick, my final step in my entryway makeover was to add shiplap. You know the stuff- the beautiful, sleek white boards that add texture to otherwise plain Jane walls! I may be late to the shiplap game, but man, I am absolutely crushing on it.

Entryway Makeover- Part 3 Shiplap Dreams Come True
Last summer, I completed my first shiplap project! I knew I would eventually shiplap our dining room wall, but I knew I needed “practice” on a smaller wall. So I shiplapped the island in our kitchen! Check out all the details here!
And I am so happy my first project was on a smaller wall. This allowed me to iron out the kinks before tackling the large space. For example, one take away from my first project was to start hanging the shiplap boards from the top and work my way down. This was especially helpful on a large wall, like the one in our dining room. Starting at the top ensured the top board- one that would be super visible- would be even and would not require weird cuts. You see, when you shiplap a wall, unless it is perfectly built, it may not be even! Who knew, right?!
Look at these beautiful boards!
DIY Girls- Where You At?
If you are new here, I want to share that I do all of my DIY projects myself. I have a wonderful, hardworking hubby who supports everything I do- and he hates projects! They are not his thing and that is okay, because for the past year, I have just made the things I want happen.
Don’t get me wrong- he helps when asked! For example, when I was hanging board and batten in our foyer I could not get one of the boards to fit. He used an attachment on a little hand held saw to cut the smallest piece off the board and walla- it worked like a charm! But when planning projects, I go into the challenge knowing it will be ME doing each step- and I am completely okay with this! There is just something so empowering about having a vision for something and then watching it come to life with my own two hands.
Shiplap Reality
Hanging shiplap is not hard- at all! In fact, it is one of the easiest projects I have done. I have gotten really comfortable using my Royobi nailing gun- I can even maneuver the board as needed with one hand while operating the nailing gun with the other! Kind of proud of myself for that!
When hanging shiplap, you want to use spacers between each board to ensure there is a small gap between each board. I like to use nickels as spacers.
Sometimes, no matter how precise you try to be, your boards are not exactly even. This happens! Do not worry! Once all of the boards are up and the wall is painted, no one will notice imperfections. Trust me! And I have a tip for when your boards end up with spaces with no gaps. Are you ready for it? A sharpie marker! Yes, I use a sharpie marker to create gaps that are not there!
Alright, here is one final before and after of the shiplap wall (but first, promise NO judgment on the before wall- I had no clue what I was doing, LOL!):
So there you have it, friends! Step three of our entryway makeover! As you step into our home, you see board and batten, faux brick, and shiplap immediately as you enter. Welcome to our home!
