Breakfast Nook Refresh

Hello friends! How is 2021 treating you? I am so glad you are here! Are you looking for a quick, inexpensive way to update the look of a room? Then you are in the right place! Today I am sharing my breakfast nook refresh!

Why Refresh Our Breakfast Nook?

On a whim a few weeks ago, I decided our breakfast nook needed fresh paint. The nook ties in to our family room, which has become totally light and bright over the last year! So taking the walls of our breakfast nook from mica gray to white dove just seemed like a great fit. And how perfect, because I have half a can of white dove paint leftover from painting my daughter’s room!

The new paint required some other new things (wink wink). The light gray curtains were replaced with longer, more stylish white textured window treatments! I found the perfect pair on Amazon!

Let’s talk light fixtures. OMG. I hated the light fixture in our breakfast nook FOREVER. We finally replaced it! And by we- I mean the hubs. Alright, alright… I need to be honest here- I cut boards, nail them to the wall, caulk, sand, paint- I do all the things, but working with electricity is just not one I am ready to take on! So I picked out the fixture from Home Depot, bought it, and placed it on the counter for him to replace!

Once it was replaced, I could not believe I lived with that ugly one for so long! Ugh! Why?! This new fixture was less than $100. And the effect it has in the space is incredible! A modern fixture can really upgrade the look of any space.

Adding a Rug to our Breakfast Nook Refresh

I never had a rug in this breakfast nook. I contemplated getting one from time to time- but just never made the purchase! Finally took the plunge and I just love it. It is probably important that I share all of my children are grown- my youngest is 16. So our years of food hitting the floor during a meal are behind us! Not sure I would be so brave to get a rug if I thought spaghetti sauce or pizza might find it’s way on to it. Lol! The rug really seems to tie the whole space together!

I dreamed of open shelving for years! I just was not sure where it would fit in best in our home. Not quite confident enough to rip off cabinets and put open shelving there, so this open wall seems like a great place. Open shelves give the space a modern look and a side benefit is you get to decorate them all year round- so win win! I was excited to get this part of the project started.

Step One for Building Open Shelves

So off to Home Depot we go! We begin by picking up two 1 x 4 x 8 boards from Home Depot. I cut each board in half and sand all four pieces pretty good! Once the sanding is complete, I stain all four boards on both sides. Min wax is perfect for this job.

Step Two for Building Open Shelves

Once the shelves are dry or while they are drying, you need to determine where on the wall you are going to place them. I like to use painter’s tape to mark where I want to shelf to go and the painter’s tape allows me to level it before I drill the holes. Painter’s tape is easy to move around and stays put when you need it- great for this part of the project.

Step Three for Building Open Shelves

Once I have the painter’s tape up and I am happy with the layout, I drill the holes and attach the shelf brackets. I am careful to drill the screw in so it is flush with the wall, making the shelf nice and tightly secured to the wall.

Refresh your space

Whoop whoop! There are my shelves- perfectly hung and ready for decorating! Easy and inexpensive too, I might add. Finally, I have the updated shelves I have been wanting!

So there you have it! A quick and easy breakfast nook refresh that goes a long way toward making the space look for more updated and stylish. What projects are you working on now?
