How to Farmhouse Stencil Everything!!

Hello friends! I know, I know, it has been a while since I posted a new blog post! First, let me apologize for being MIA. It’s my job… I absolutely LOVE my work! I am a middle school assistant principal, and August was a crazy busy month getting ready for kids back on our campus (kids returned August 10), my oldest child moved into her dorm at University of Florida (happy and sad by this change), and then sickness took over our home- ugh! Well, I am so happy to be back and so happy you found this page and we are able to connect.

Recently, I got a Cricut Explore Air, and I have been stenciling everything! So fun practicing new fonts and exploring new patterns. I spent time this weekend cutting vinyl. I’d love to show you how to farmhouse stencil everything! (…well, maybe not EVERYthing, but close)

First, I want to share that I love all things Cricut! Please know this is not a paid sponsorship, and I was not given my Cricut Explore Air in exchange for positive reviews. This summer, I purchased my Cricut Explore Air  and I LOVE it! I only became an affiliate for Cricut after falling in love with the product.

I bought my first Cricut in the fall of 2010. It was used, purchased off eBay. As a classroom teacher, I used it to make signs and posters for my classroom. It was awesome- I would bring it to work, and we would have a Cricut party in a teacher’s classroom. Mostly, my first Cricut was used to cut letters from cardstock. The Cricut Explore Air cuts letters from cardstock and so, so much more!

Farmhouse Stencil a Crate

I bought this wooden crate three years ago at Homegoods. We typically store pillows in it. Outside of that, it really does not serve a practical purpose. But I love it still! This is how it looked before I stenciled it:

I thought it might be cute to add some stenciling to give it a farmhouse feel! Using my Cricut Explore Air, I cut the stencil from the vinyl. This process took seconds, literally.

Once the stencil was cut, I placed it on the crate. I used two different fonts.

Next, I applied two coats of black paint and got this:

Farmhouse Stencil a Pillow

I love a white pillow! It looks nicely on almost any piece of furniture and can easily match most accessories. You can dress it up or make it a low key accent. Pillows can add texture to your space.

The bench in my foyer holds two pillows:

I decided it is time to give this simple pillow a farmhouse makeover! After browsing farmhouse sayings on Pinterest, I decided “Hello” would serve as a great greeting for guests at the front door. A simple, warm greeting would be great!

With a couple of letters painted, the task started to turn FUN!

Here it is, all filled in with black paint. I used regular crafting paint, but next time I would probably use fabric paint to avoid issues when washing. For now, I hand wash the pillow case and it is holding up fine!

And, ta da… I love the big reveal when I remove the stencil!

Repurpose and Farmhouse Stencil a Sign

Four years ago, my style was much more Tuscan than farmhouse glam. Rich reds and tans were my jam! I bought this sign for our kitchen, and lately, it just does not fit.

This sign is dark and drab and the colors just do not do anything for me anymore. But instead of tossing it, I decided to give it a makeover!

The first step I took to makeover this sign was to paint it white. Two coats did the trick!

Next, I measured the board to determine the size of the letters I could use. After landing on using the term Bakery and measuring the board, I cut each letter 3 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide.

Laying the stencil on the newly repainted sign took some time to get the letters straight and equally spaced apart.

**Crafters tip- anytime you are making multiple letter cuts with a vinyl cutting machine, always record the font style. **

Yikes- I did not do this! I cut all the letters, turned off my machine and packed it away. Then, as I applied the letters, the E got messed up! It was unusable. Ugh! Time to develop a plan B.

First, I painted all the other stenciled letters.

This left me seeking my plan B. 🙂

Plan B to the Rescue

I was going to have to trace and fill the best I could to get this done. I traced the letter, and very carefully colored in the area inside the tracing. This was hard, not going to lie! It took a very steady and patient hand.  Not my forte! Painting a stencil requires less precision. Way easier to paint the stencil than trace it perfectly!

…and finally, my repurposed sign is done!
